A native of
Madisonville, the late Estes Kefauver served as a member of the U.S. House of
Representatives in 1939; and later was elected to the U.S. Senate where he
served until his death in 1963. Kefauver twice ran unsuccessfully for the
Democratic Presidential Nomination. However, in 1956 he ran for Vice-President
of the United States with Adlai Stevenson.
Estes Kefauver became well-known for his chairmanship of the committee to
investigate organized crime, which was televised in 1950 and '51.
